Materials

Durable materials and precise craftsmanship

A Taschenbegleiter is hand-crafted for a long life. When time leaves its mark on the material, it only makes a model more unique.
Our Taschenbegleiters are 100% handcrafted in Germany. They are durable companions, made of long-lasting, hard-wearing materials. They can be used in the office, in the workshop, on trips, and on all kinds of adventures. They feel good to the touch and can take a beating – a little rain, some spilled coffee, or a few scratches.

*100% handcrafted in Germany
All our materials are sourced from partner companies in Germany and Europe. The leathers are tanned and dyed chrome-free, or of vegetable origin. The wool felt is 100% German merino wool, soft and warm to the touch. The vegan leather is breathable, durable, and made from cactus. Plant felt is a worthy alternative made from plant residues and wood fibers. Our stainless-steel clips come from Bavaria, each one tested several times. We pay great attention to the origin of our materials and their processing, so that a Taschenbegleiter lasts a long time.
Outer leather

We use only natural leather, available in various thicknesses, colors, and surface finishes. Our partner workshops use exclusively skins from European cattle.

We craft the LTD_ and SOL_ models from sturdy, vegetable-tanned smooth leather with a subtle embossed texture.

The leather used for the SO_ model and many of our accessories is softer. It is chrome-free tanned and dyed, polished multiple times with natural oils and waxes, and then lightly buffed.

Please note that natural irregularities—such as creases, scars, or insect bites—are part of the material's natural character. With use, the leather develops a natural patina over time; it does not require additional conditioning. The natural oils from your hands provide sufficient nourishment during handling. Please be aware that applying extra leather conditioner will cause the leather to darken.

Printing blanket

This upcycled material was once wrapped around a cylinder in an offset printing press to transfer ink from the printing plate to the paper. In the process, it »saw« a lot of text and imagery. Traces of ink, patterns, and fragments of text and images remain visible on the surface—making every printing blanket unique. Chemical analysis confirms that, following our cleaning process, any ink residues remaining in the material pose no health risks. As some printing blankets may transfer a small amount of color initially, please avoid contact with light-colored fabrics. We also »rescue« offcuts generated during the manufacturer‘s cutting process; unused printing blankets are solid-colored and show no traces of text or images.

Tent fabric (Vaude upcycling)
VAUDE, based in Tettnang on Lake Constance, manufactures and sells outdoor clothing and gear. The owner-operated family business is a member of the "Partnership for Sustainable Textiles" and was elected "Germany's Most Sustainable Brand" in 2015. The fabrics of tents, which can no longer be repaired at the VAUDE workshop, are made available to us by VAUDE. After cleaning and cutting, we use this material to line the ST_17 Taschenbegleiter. This upcycling process is quite time-consuming, but we highly appreciate the cooperation in terms of sustainability. Ultralight yet strong, tent fabric is the perfect lining for a Taschenbegleiter.

Interior leather
Another material we use for the inside of the Taschenbegleiter is chrome-free tanned suede from a German tannery. It provides a very comfortable writing surface and is slightly thinner than our 2 mm thick wool felt.
100% merino felt
Our 2mm thick, durable pure wool felt is made from merino wool. Felt made from pure sheep's wool is a high-quality material that has stood the test of time for thousands of years and will not lint or stain at the edges of a Taschenbegleiter, even after many years of use. Pure wool with natural wool grease has a self-cleaning effect, similar to silk.
Vegetable felt
After a long search, we found a high-quality vegan alternative to wool felt and suede from a German manufacturer that is just as durable. The material is made of 70% plant residues and 30% wood fibers and comes quite close to soft merino wool felt. The wood fibers are not dyed through, creating a mottled effect in the vegetable felt.
Cactus leather
Vegan yes, but please durable and natural. This fascinating material is just as durable as leather, but does not develop a patina and is easy to wash off. Cactus leather has a particularly pleasant feel. The manufacturing process for cactus leather is amazingly simple and environmentally friendly. It begins with the harvesting of the nopal cactus leaves, which are carefully dried after harvesting. The dried leaves are then crushed and processed into a fiber mass. This mass is then treated with natural dyes to achieve the desired color and texture. A major advantage of cactus leather is that it does not use any animal products or synthetic chemicals in its manufacturing process. In comparison, the production of conventional leather often requires the use of chemicals such as chromium and the slaughter of animals, which has a significant environmental impact.
Hemp Leather

The hemp fibers used are a by-product of industrial hemp cultivation in Europe. LOVR™ vegan hemp leather is completely free from petroleum-based products and chemicals and is naturally biodegradable. Moreover, LOVR™ is pleasingly lightweight.

Woven canvas
Made of pure, high-quality cotton. This durable natural material is manufactured in Italy. We use this cotton for the interior of the SOL_23 and KL_24. For our TACO case, we use canvas that is waxed on one side, allowing you to clean the inside of the pencil case.
